A message from the Chippewas of Georgina Island Public Works Department

Winter Tips and Information

Winter Safety: This winter, we want to ensure safety above all. Please review the information below as a refresher for the coming season. Public and Workplace safety are a priority for us.

Driving:  Take your time and drive according to the road and weather conditions.  Plan ahead and keep emergency supplies in your vehicle, especially when the time comes for ice road driving. Purchase a car charger for your cell phone and keep at least half of a tank of gas in your car at all times in case of emergency.

We use a salt/sand mixture for winter maintenance of the roads and parking lots to combat snow and ice. This salt/sand mixture is used sparingly as we are conscious of our close connection to the lake and the damage  runoff can do .

Winter Maintenance: The snowplows maintain the road and travel at a speed that ensures the snow is plowed out into the ditch area.  Please make sure to have any personal items or vehicles that could be hit or buried are at least 10 – 15 feet from the road.  Plowing is done in a priority sequence as determined by the Department.

All garbage bins must be clear of snow and accessible to the public works worker.

Emergency Muster Station: In the event of a prolonged power outage the Community Centre has a generator and will be open for anyone and their families to come and warm up or cook a meal.

Your Home: Stock your home with several flashlights and the corresponding batteries.  Purchase a battery-powered radio.  Try not to open your fridge and freezers unless necessary.
